Emily Cavendish

UKCP Registered Psychotherapist

About Me

I am an Integrative Psychotherapist with over 15 years of clinical experience. I hold an MSc from Metanoia Institute and am a registered member of the UKCP and a registered and accredited member BACP. I have additional training in the related fields of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), addiction recovery, traumatology and forensic psychotherapy.

At the heart of my approach and choice of an integrative training is a belief in the importance of honoring the unique needs of each client and of being able to draw on different modalities and principles in my response to these needs. Underpinning my model are the tenets of relational, developmental and existential theories, alongside an ability to respond intuitively and compassionately to my clients.

I am relational in my approach and believe that our capacity for meaningful, authentic and reciprocal bonds with other human beings is central to our sense of psychological well-being and resilience. I prioritize the quality of the relationship between therapist and client and strive to promote a warm, safe and collaborative alliance. I believe that many people seek therapy in the hope of changing compelling but ultimately self-defeating patterns, and I aim to provide an environment in which these sequences of feelings, thoughts and behavior can be explored and understood in their unique context. It is my belief that it is by this process that change can be facilitated with compassion and acceptance rather than criticism.

Over the course of my career and in addition to my private practice, I have extensive experience of working in a diverse range of professional fields that include addiction, prison and probation services, women’s refuge, trauma and refugee services.

Training and Qualification

I hold an MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy from Metanoia Institute (validated by Middlesex University) in addition to the following diplomas:

Addiction Counselling
Advanced Psychotherapy
Integrative Psychotherapy
Criminology and Profiling

I have a certificate in EMDR (approved by EMDR International Association and EMDR Europe Association)
