As a late-diagnosed AuDHD (autistic and ADHD) counsellor, I completed my training before there was much awareness of neurodivergence. My own therapists did not pick up on my neurodivergence, and so, for many years, I put all my social anxiety, overwhelm, black and white thinking, boom and bust ways of working etc down to a dysfunctional upbringing.

Let’s face it—modern life can feel like a non-stop game of emotional whack-a-mole. Between emails, family drama, scrolling anxiety, and that general feeling of “What even is going on?”—you’re not alone if your nervous system feels a little fried.

What if I told you that the answer to some of that delightful modern-day overwhelm is literally right under your nose? Yes, I’m talking about breathing.  But not just any breathing—we’re diving into the fascinating, sometimes mysterious, and always transformative world of breathwork for trauma healing and emotional resilience.

So… What Is Breathwork?

So you breath all the time, what’s the big deal around breathwork?

Breathwork is like taking that unconscious, everyday act and giving it a superpower. It’s the conscious, intentional manipulation of your breath to achieve specific physiological, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits. It’s like a workout for your nervous system—only instead of doing squats, you’re inhaling deeply, exhaling with purpose, and possibly having some powerful “a-ha” moments along the way. It’s a bit like pressing the ‘reset’ button on your nervous system, or giving your emotional storage room a much needed clear out.

How Can Breathwork Benefit Me?

On a physiological level, it can help regulate your heart rate, improve circulation, boost your immune system, and even give your digestion a gentle nudge.

But where it really shines is in the realm of your mental and emotional well-being. Ever felt that familiar knot of anxiety in your stomach? Breathwork can be a powerful tool for reducing stress, calming an overactive mind, and cultivating a sense of inner peace that feels like a warm hug. It can also enhance focus and clarity, making you feel less like a squirrel trying to cross a busy road and more like a zen master on a mountaintop.

  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Improves emotional regulation
  • Releases stuck trauma or tension
  • Boosts energy and clarity
  • Enhances self-awareness and connection

Breathwork For Trauma Healing

Conscious Connected Breathwork (CCB) is especially beneficial for those working through trauma—whether that’s a one-time event or long-term stress— your nervous system may get stuck in a perpetual state of “fight, flight, or freeze.” Breathwork offers a gentle yet profound way to help regulate that dysregulated nervous system by gently bypassing the thinking mind, allowing stored experiences to surface and process without needing to be relived. By consciously manipulating the breath, we can create a sense of safety within our own bodies, allowing stored tension and emotional residue to gently release. It’s not about reliving the trauma, but rather creating space for the body to process and integrate past experiences, leading to a feeling of liberation and resilience. Think of it as gently unclenching a fist that you didn’t even realize you were holding for years.

What Is Conscious Connected Breathwork?

Conscious Connected Breathwork (CCB) is a specific technique where you breathe continuously without pauses between your inhales and exhales. It’s like creating a circular flow of breath, hence the “connected” part. This continuous flow can lead to altered states of consciousness, allowing for deeper emotional releases, profound insights, and a connection to something larger than yourself – call it your intuition, your spirit, or just the really cool part of your brain that you don’t usually access. It’s less about hyperventilating and more about creating a powerful, sustained energetic current within your body. You can find more information here.

What Happens During a Session?

Whether online or in-person, a typical session begins with a check-in and a clear explanation of the process. You’ll usually lie down comfortably, and I’ll start with a short meditation to help your body relax before guiding you through the breath pattern.

This experience isn’t about thinking – it’s about feeling. You might notice unusual sensations like tingling, twitching, waves of emotion, yawning, burping, or even… yes, farting! These are all perfectly normal signs that your body is undergoing a deep internal cleanse.

Every session is unique; you won’t always have an intense experience. Often, you might feel simply relaxed and peaceful, even if it seems like “not much” is happening. Trust that your body is doing exactly what it needs to. It’s an intensely personal journey, and there’s no “right” way to experience it.

After a session, you might feel incredibly relaxed, like you’ve had the best nap of your life. Others feel energized and clear-headed. Sometimes, emotions can continue to surface for a few days, so remember to be kind and gentle with yourself.

Is Breathwork Safe?

Generally, yes! For most healthy individuals, breathwork is incredibly safe. However, like any powerful modality, there are contraindications. If you have severe cardiovascular issues, a history of seizures, glaucoma, severe mental health conditions like active psychosis, or are pregnant, it’s crucial to consult your doctor and inform your facilitator beforehand. A good facilitator will always screen for these conditions and adapt the session accordingly. It’s important to work with someone who knows what they’re doing—especially if you’re exploring trauma-related material.

How Do I Choose a Breathwork Facilitator?

Breathwork is powerful. It deserves to be done in a safe, supported space—especially if you’re diving deep.

Choosing the right person is key to a positive and effective experience. Here’s what to look for:

  • Training and Certification:Look for someone who has undergone extensive training (at least 6 months) from a reputable breathwork school. Don’t be afraid to ask about their qualifications.
  • Experience:The more experience, the better. Someone who has guided many individuals and groups will be better equipped to handle diverse experiences.
  • Trauma-Informed Approach:If you’re working with trauma, ensure your facilitator understands trauma and how it manifests in the body. They should be able to create a truly safe and sensitive space.
  • Empathetic and Non-Judgmental:You should feel completely comfortable and safe with them. Trust your gut feeling!
  • Clear Boundaries and Ethics:A professional facilitator will have clear boundaries, explain what to expect, and respect your autonomy.

What are the things to look out for:

Be wary of anyone making outlandish promises, guaranteeing specific outcomes, or using overly aggressive techniques without proper guidance. Avoid anyone who dismisses your concerns or doesn’t prioritize your safety. Your well-being is paramount!

Ready to Take a Deep Dive?

So, there you have it! Breathwork isn’t just about oxygen; it’s about unlocking your body’s innate capacity for healing, growth, and profound self-discovery. It’s a journey that can help you release what no longer serves you, connect more deeply with yourself, and generally just breathe a little easier in this wild ride called life.
