ADMP Dance Movement Psychotherapist

About Me

I am a dance movement psychotherapist, I work from a feminist perspective. I am interested in exploring the intersectionalities of our lives; of how gender, age, ethnicity, class, wealth, health and mobility impact on our proximity to, or distance from, positions of empowerment.

I am inspired by the Humanist work of Carl Rogers, that as human beings we are the best authority of our own experience and we have the agency to create the change we want to see in ourselves.

As your therapist, I offer, in the original meaning of ‘therapy’ (from the Greek, ‘to walk with someone'), the trust and companionship to walk with you on your personal journey of understanding, discovery and acceptance.

How I work

In dance movement therapy, we work creatively, exploring the thoughts and feelings that we hold within our bodies. In movement, we can think through them differently. Therapy offers a confidential , safe and supportive environment in which to explore. In my sessions we may work by moving, drawing, dancing or in stillness, as feels appropriate to you. I value the importance of creative expression and the opportunity to play.

Whatever has brought you to seeking therapy suggests that now is the right time; there may be something that is troubling you or that does not sit well with you, in your personal or professional life. You may be experiencing negative feelings, anxiety, or depression; brought on by overwork and exhaustion, family crisis or something less obvious, perhaps from your past, that remains unclear and unresolved.

Sessions often - but not always - follow the format of talking, to check in, then time to move, then talking again , reflecting on what has come up for you. You may choose to work with or without music; I may move with you or support you by witnessing your own exploration. Using this pattern we build a supportive therapeutic relationship to help you explore your feelings and experience of being in the world.

Initial consultation

After you make contact, I invite you to a trial session, lasting 50 minutes, for you to experience a dance movement psychotherapy session; for us both to get a sense of whether it feels right to work together and whether I am best placed to support you. If you decide to proceed, we usually agree an initial period of about 6-10 sessions. This may be sufficient to allow you to achieve the outcome you seek, or our explorations may establish that longer term therapy might be beneficial. You will have the opportunity to review our work periodically.

Who I work with

I welcome people from all backgrounds including gender and sexual diversity clients; those working as carers; teachers, and members of the educational community; those who are recovering from mental ill health and those who have experiences of or are living with mental health disabilities or learning disabilities. I welcome psychotherapy students and trainees. I have experience of living and working in the countries and cultures where German,French, Spanish and Mandarin are spoken. If it would support your therapy for us to speak in German or French , please mention this in your enquiry.
